Synopsis
Meet Pepper, swim team captain, chronic overachiever, and all-around perfectionist. Her family may be falling apart, but their massive fast-food chain is booming ― mainly thanks to Pepper, who is barely managing to juggle real life while secretly running Big League Burger’s massive Twitter account.
Enter Jack, class clown and constant thorn in Pepper’s side. When he isn’t trying to duck out of his obscenely popular twin’s shadow, he’s busy working in his family’s deli. His relationship with the business that holds his future might be love/hate, but when Big League Burger steals his grandma’s iconic grilled cheese recipe, he’ll do whatever it takes to take them down, one tweet at a time.
All’s fair in love and cheese ― that is, until Pepper and Jack’s spat turns into a viral Twitter war. Little do they know, while they’re publicly duking it out with snarky memes and retweet battles, they’re also falling for each other in real life ― on an anonymous chat app Jack built.
As their relationship deepens and their online shenanigans escalate ― people on the internet are shipping them?? ― their battle gets more and more personal, until even these two rivals can’t ignore they were destined for the most unexpected, awkward, all-the-feels romance that neither of them expected. My Review
Bear in mind that this is my personal opinion.
“Tweet Cute” is the adorable debut of an avid fan-fiction writer called Emma Lord. The author is someone who knows her online world: lots of memes, references and overall expressions. This is helpful because Tweet Cute, as the name and the synopsis give away, is a book mainly set on the 280 character world of Twitter. Reading this feels a lot like scrolling through your feed and texting your best friend about something you saw.
The main characters, Pepper and Jack, both come from a food background; Pepper’s parents own a big burger franchise while Jack’s parents own a small deli in New York. Family is pretty high up on their priorities list and it’s both a blessing and a cursing for their story.
They know themselves thoroughly online, but not so much in the real world, even though they go to the same school. Which makes the banter in this book to die for.
When I first started it, I didn’t really enjoy it, not gonna lie. Emma Lord has a very unique writing that takes a while to grow on you. The beginning was quite slow-paced, but when it really started, oh boy, it was quite a ride. The characters are beautifully described, so much you feel as though they go to school with you. Yes, it is possible to feel this even if you’re not a teenager in a NY high school.
Final Thoughts
If you’re looking for a contemporary YA pick-me-up Rom-Com, Tweet Cute is the horse you should bet on. Also, pack up with snacks before reading it, the food description will make you go insane even if you don’t have any near you pronto.
When you’re finished, follow Emma Lorde on Instagram because she bakes the recipes featured on this book quite a lot.
